What Causes People To Have Low Self-Esteem?

If you suffer from low self-esteem, it can have a major impact on your life. It robs you of the confidence and sense of self-worth to achieve the best you can, be it in education, personal healthcare, relationships, or employment. You end up settling for second best – or worse – because you don’t believe you deserve better.

Life coaching for low self-esteem can make a huge difference. It can help you break negative thought patterns and show you that many of the ‘life lessons’ you might have received in the past were false ones that have misled you about your own worth.

There are several common causes of low self-esteem. The most obvious is the disapproving authority figure, such as a parent for whom whatever you did was never good enough. Alternatively, they may have been uninvolved or disengaged, meaning however hard you tried they would not give approval.

Other parent/caregiver problems can involve conflicts between them, which you might have been led to believe you somehow contributed to, or situations in which you were bullied and they failed to support you.

Academic struggles without the right support can also be an issue, while traumatic experiences like abuse, negative belief systems, or social and media-induced expectations can also take their toll.

There are some things you may be able to do on a self-help basis, such as writing down some positive thoughts and facts about yourself. These might include listing talents you know you have, or people you know are very fond of you, as positives.

However, if you have deep-rooted struggles with self-esteem, it is unlikely this will be anywhere near enough, not least because you may lack the trust in yourself to judge your own worth well, and in doing so conclude that any positive thoughts you have about yourself are not justified.

That is why having an outside expert therapist to help can make all the difference. They can help you trace the roots of your problems and see past them, helping to liberate you from negative thoughts and replace them with something positive that can help you flourish in ways you never have before.
