How To Make The First Step To A Life-Changing Journey Stick

Every journey to change your life begins with just one step.

Most people have heard a saying like this, originating from the classical text Tao Te Ching explaining how even a journey of 1000 “li” (Chinese miles, equal to half a kilometre) starts with a single step.

The idea, of course, is that no matter what you want to do to change your life, regardless of how complex, how difficult and how long, there is always a starting point and first step that you can do.

It is a core principle that many bespoke life coaches will teach because ultimately the hardest part is getting started; from there, it is just about keeping going and keeping your momentum.

Some people will find that first step so difficult that once they take it they do not want to have to make another one, but other people will find the first step easier but struggle to keep going, whether they are improving their health, dismantling limiting beliefs or starting a new business.

Ultimately, the best way to complete a thousand-mile journey is to complete fifty five-mile journeys. Set yourself smaller goals that take you closer to where you want to be, rather than being discouraged that your goal still feels so distant.

You do not start learning a language by picking up a novel; you learn a few words at a time, which slowly become phrases, which become sentences which become a conversation.

This is true for any skill and any life step. If you want to start a new business, start by learning what you need to know or get in touch with people on that path, learn all of the steps you need to take and think about what you can offer in a particular field.

Before you know it, you’re not only starting the journey to change your life but feeling the benefits without even realising it.
